Shooting within the A.T.C.
The Air Training Corps offers a wide variety of target rifle shooting to all its cadets, ranging from basic air rifles for our new cadets to full bore target rifles for more experienced cadets. We also offer chances for cadets to shoot at Squadron level right up to International competitions.
All cadets undergo Initial Weapons Training on each rifle they want to go forward and fire and are then tested by Qualified Instructors to ensure that they can fire the rifle correctly, safely and effectively. This is called a Weapon Handling Test (WHT). In this training they are also trained on the principles of marksmanship and range safety.
After this they are eligible to fire the weapon as often as they can for another 6 months at which point they will have to take another WHT for that weapon to ensure safety. During live fire they have the chance to obtain a 'marksman' if they become accurate enough. To ensure this, all cadets get taught the 'principles of marksmanship' and are coached by trained staff.
All live firing is carried out on approved Army/MOD Ranges under controlled conditions.
Over 18 cadets and members of staff go through training courses to test the personnel on each weapon, instruct how to use and coach firing the weapons right up to running a range on which the weapons are fired on. This is done from Wing up to Corps level.
